Lora Jane Harris Cunningham papers, 1944-

Includes copeis of letters she wrote to her family, 1944, and an unfinished autobiographical work. the opening chapters of "Jane's Story", describe her childhood, the loss of her father to illness at an early age and the devastating results of losing a parent during the Depression. Jane writes that she spent much of her girlhood life in a home for children in Los Angeles while her mother worked as a nurse in private homes. She describes her education and move to Tucson, Arizona after the war began. Jane took private flying lessons in Tucson and joined the Women Airforce Service Pilots, training at Avenger Field, Sweetwater, Texas. After graduation, Jane Harris was assigned briefly to Douglas Army Air Field (Arizona) where she did "test hops" on newly repaired airplanes and ferried people to other fields. Photocopies of photographs from Sweetwater, Texas, are included with the letters.
